The Midway area of Texas saw settlement between 1870 and 1879, during the Reconstruction Era, fueled by expanding immigration. This period also led to the establishment of Midway School and Union Church, along with an adjacent burial ground, between 1879 and 1882. While the oldest dated headstone in Midway Cemetery belongs to James Furney (d. 1888), it is known that earlier burials took place there. The cemetery serves as a significant historical site, containing the graves of many pioneer settlers, citizens, children, and veterans. Nestled among large native trees, Midway Cemetery stands as a tangible reminder of the farmers, workers, business leaders, and families who formed the Midway community.
